The impact of missing teeth

Jawbone loss

A missing tooth results in a lack of stimulation in the jaw bone in the empty region. This can cause the jawbone in the area to lose its mass and shape. If a tooth is lost and not replaced with an implant in the first year, the bone can lose more than 50% of its width.

Misalignment

The gap caused by a missing tooth can cause neighbouring teeth to lean toward the gap and out of alignment, affecting bite and chewing ability. Problems with bite can result in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues and may cause pain and headaches.

Increased risk of gum disease

Plaque and tartar are more likely to accumulate when the other teeth shift. This is because the extra nooks and crannies that grow around the mouth only become worse, making it more difficult to clean the teeth. Gum disease or tooth decay happens as a result of this.

Future treatments difficult

If you wait too long to get a dental implant, future procedures get more complex and expensive as the other teeth in the mouth shift.

Dental implants can help all of the issues above and have a long-term success rate of over 95% with good home and professional care.

The top 3 benefits of dental implants

Dental implants help to keep the jawbone tissue healthy
Dental implants prevent bone degeneration since they are inserted directly into the jawbone.

Dental implants are not prone to slipping or shifting
Unlike dentures, which can shift and move throughout the day and night, dental implants will not slip or move. This allows you to enjoy all of your favourite foods and treats without fear of your dental implants falling out.

Dental implants can restore your confidence
Dental implants resemble natural teeth in appearance and function. Many of our patients remark on how much the procedure has restored their confidence in their smile, allowing them to be more socially active and happier overall.

For a tooth implant I highly recommend Dr Nick Williams and his team. Like most people, the thought of the dentist puts me in a cold sweat. Dr Nick has changed that for me forever.

There are so many benefits to having a beautiful smile and healthy mouth. Most people don’t understand the difference a full, working set of teeth make until they experience it for themselves.

A lot of the time, people don’t realise there is such an easy solution for missing teeth or they have misconceptions around treatment options Some of these misconceptions include:

“My teeth are too far gone and it’s too late to do anything about it.”

“Getting dental implants is painful.”

“My body will reject the implant.”

These misconceptions are simply not true. Most patients feel very little, if any, pain during the dental implant procedure. Our clinicians are happy to offer you numbing treatment and light sedation to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Dental implants also have a success rate of over 95 percent. Being made of medical-grade titanium means they are biocompatible and the likelihood of rejection is extremely low.

Our dental implant patients have reported being able to chew and taste foods that they have not been able to eat for a long time. We treat patients of all ages, so as long as you are of sound health, dental implants can truly improve your quality of life.

Beyond the mouth: how missing teeth can lead to cognitive decline

According to a new study done by experts at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and published in JAMDA: The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, tooth loss is a risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia, and the risk of cognitive decline increases with each tooth lost. Tooth loss was linked to a 1.48 times higher risk of cognitive decline and a 1.28 times higher risk of dementia, according to the study. Additonally, researchers discovered that for every tooth lost, a person’s risk of cognitive deterioration increased by 1.4 percent.

While this study might be new, the knowledge around the mouth’s connection to the rest of the body has been around for a while. At Dental Holistix, we are on a mission to inspire healthier and happier communities through oral health education and integrated dentistry that improves quality of life.
