What a Day in the Life of Our Dental Hygienists Looks Like

By: Dental Holistix

While our dentists take care of your overall dental needs, there are two crucial members of our team that work diligently to ensure your smile stays bright and healthy. Our dental hygienists, Kara Williams and Jenny Cheong, are the unsung heroes of your oral health journey.

Today, we invite you to step behind the scenes and gain a glimpse into their daily routine and responsibilities.

An early start

Their day typically begins early—at around 7.30am. They arrive before the clinic opens to prepare for the day ahead. This includes sterilising tools, setting up treatment rooms and reviewing patient schedules.

Comprehensive oral health assessment

Before any treatment begins, our dental hygienists conduct a thorough oral assessment. This involves examining a patient’s teeth, gums, tongue and oral tissues. They look for signs of gum disease, cavities, oral cancer and any other issues that might require attention.

Professional cleaning and soft tissue management

Now, it’s time for the heart of our hygienists’ work: professional cleaning and soft tissue management.

Guided Biofilm Therapy
Using specialised instruments, our dental hygienists skillfully remove plaque and calculus  buildup from the teeth. They pay close attention to hard-to-reach areas, such as between teeth and below the gumline. This meticulous process not only leaves your teeth sparkling but also helps prevent cavities and gum disease.  The biofilm accumulation on the tooth surface is first highlighted with a special disclosing dye. The EMS airflow machine is used to selectively remove biofilm (bacteria and its waste products) from the tooth surface. A  high pressure stream of air, warm water and fine powder is painlessly directed over the teeth and gums.

Periodontal maintenance
Our dental hygienists may recommend periodontal maintenance for patients with a history of gum disease. This involves regular, specialised cleanings to prevent the recurrence of gum problems. It’s a vital step in preserving gum health.

Educational moments

Our dental hygienists are not just skilled practitioners; they’re also educators. During your treatment, they provide valuable insights into your oral health. They offer tips on proper brushing and flossing techniques, recommend suitable dental products and answer any questions you might have.

X-rays and imaging

When necessary, our hygienists may take x-rays to get a closer look at your dental health. These images help identify issues that may not be visible during a regular exam.

Sealants and fluoride treatments

Our dental hygienists may also apply sealants to protect your teeth from decay and fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel. These preventive measures are particularly beneficial for those at higher risk for cavities.

Personalised oral care treatment plans

Before you leave, our hygienists work with our dentists to create a personalised oral care plan. This plan outlines any necessary treatments, future appointments and home care instructions to keep your smile in top shape.

A vital role in your oral health

As you can see, our dental hygienists are much more than teeth cleaners. They are your oral health advocate, educator and partner in maintaining a healthy smile. Their expertise and dedication is at the core of our commitment to providing exceptional dental care.

The next time you visit our clinic and encounter our dental hygienists, know that you’re in capable hands. Their passion for oral health ensures that your journey to optimal oral health is as comfortable and effective as possible.
