If you’ve ever wondered about teeth whitening, its benefits, and the process, you’re in the right place! At Dental Holistix, our professional in-clinic teeth whitening service is designed to transform your smile safely and effectively. Using advanced whitening techniques and custom care, we’ll help you achieve a brighter, more confident smile.
Professional teeth whitening involves a specially formulated bleaching agent applied to your teeth, targeting surface stains and discolouration. Our experienced hygienists use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel, which penetrates the enamel to break down stains and restore a brighter smile. Advanced light or laser technology is used to activate the bleaching agent, enhancing the results and achieving a whiter smile in less time.
Our team also provides custom-fitted trays and take-home whitening gel so you can maintain your brighter smile at home. We’ll guide you on how to use these trays effectively for the best long-term results.

Can anyone get their teeth professionally whitened?
Teeth whitening is safe for most people, but we recommend a consultation to assess oral health and select the most suitable whitening method.
How long does the in-clinic procedure take?
In-clinic whitening typically takes about one to two hours, depending on the extent of discoloration, with immediate results.
Are there any side effects?
Some patients may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or mild gum irritation, which usually subsides shortly after treatment.
Can teeth whitening be done on crowns or veneers?
Teeth whitening only affects natural teeth. If you have restorations that no longer match, we can discuss replacement options for a uniform look.
Is it safe to eat all foods after professional teeth whitening?
Avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, like coffee, red wine, and dark berries, for a few days post-treatment. For more details, visit our blog on post-whitening care.
TEETH WHITENING: IN-CLINIC AND TAKE-HOME TRAYS PRE- AND POST-TREATMENT
Please follow these instructions carefully to maximise the effectiveness and comfort of your teeth whitening treatment. Whether you’re whitening in the clinic or using take-home trays, proper preparation and care can make a significant difference in your results.
Oral hygiene: Brush and floss thoroughly before your appointment to remove any surface plaque and debris, allowing the whitening agent to penetrate more evenly for optimal results.
Avoid staining foods and drinks: For at least 24 hours prior, avoid consuming foods and beverages that can stain, such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, beetroot, curries and coloured sodas. Pre-existing stains may affect the uniformity of whitening.
Sensitivity preparation: If you have experienced sensitivity with previous whitening treatments or in general with cold drinks/ air on the teeth, consider using a desensitising toothpaste for 1–2 weeks before your appointment to help minimise potential discomfort.
Food intake: Have a light meal before your appointment, as you may need to avoid eating for a short period afterward.
Avoid staining foods and drinks: For the first 48 hours after treatment, avoid foods and drinks that can stain, such as coffee, tea, wine, dark sauces, and highly pigmented fruits. Stick to "white" or light-coloured foods such as rice, chicken, pasta and water.
Refrain from smoking and tobacco: Avoid smoking and tobacco products for at least 48 hours, as these can stain and compromise the whitening results.
Oral hygiene: Continue brushing twice daily and flossing once daily, using a non-abrasive, whitening-friendly toothpaste. A soft-bristled toothbrush can help minimise sensitivity.
Managing tooth sensitivity: Some sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures is common after whitening. If sensitivity occurs, apply a small amount of toothpaste for sensitive teeth on the affected area overnight. Continue as needed, and if sensitivity persists, contact our clinic.
Gum sensitivity and burns: While we will take precautions to avoid contact of the whitening gel on the gums, this can occasionally happen and burns can occur. This will generally be restricted to a small area and appear as a white patch, gradually returning to pink over 24-48 hours. If this happens, our clinician will provide you with Vitamin E gel to apply regularly to the area. It is imperative that we retract your cheeks on tongue throughout the entire procedure to avoid this, so if this might be an issue for you please bring it to our attention as we may need to consider alternatives.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water after the procedure to rinse away food particles and reduce the chance of staining immediately post-treatment.
Touch-ups: If provided, follow instructions carefully for any at-home whitening kit to maintain the brightness of your smile over time.
Oral hygiene: Brush and floss right before using your trays to ensure the whitening gel can penetrate evenly on clean teeth.
Avoid staining foods and drinks: As with in-clinic treatments, avoid staining foods and beverages for 24 hours before treatment to prevent uneven results.
Sensitivity preparation: If sensitivity is a concern, apply desensitising toothpaste for 1–2 weeks prior. If needed, you can also apply a small amount directly in the trays and wear overnight.
Fit and comfort check: Try in the trays in first to check fit and comfort. Make sure they are clean and dry before applying the gel, as moisture can slow down the whitening process.
Applying the whitening gel: Place a small drop of gel on the front surface of each tooth area in the tray. Avoid overfilling, as spreading will occur naturally. Recap the syringe after each use.
Inserting the trays: Align the loaded tray over your teeth and press it in place with your fingers. Lightly press along the surface to spread the gel across your teeth, and wipe away any excess with a tissue.
Wearing time: Start with 30 minutes to 1 hour if you are new to whitening, increasing wearing time if you experience little to no sensitivity. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for optimal wearing time. Generally if you were wearing them throughout the evenings for 3-4 hours, we would expect to see a noticeable difference after 7-10 days. There is no limit on how many consecutive days you chose to whiten your teeth, however there will be a maximum effect reached after a certain point.
Sensitivity: This is commonly experienced as occasional short, sharp jolts of low to medium intensity while wearing the trays, and sometimes during the day in between usage. We recommend persisting with the treatment as this usually subsides in intensity and frequency over time. It should stop completely within 24 hours of finishing the whitening process. In a small percentage of people (especially where there is pre-existing sensitivity) this does not improve or becomes intolerable. In this case we would recommend using the trays for shorter periods or every second day, or in the worst case stopping completely. It is fine to continue using desensitising toothpaste during the process. All whitening systems cause some degree of temporary sensitivity, however through experience with trialing these different systems, we have found products that keep this to an absolute minimum.
After whitening: Remove the trays and rinse your teeth, brushing gently to remove any remaining gel. If sensitivity occurs, apply a pea-sized amount of sensitive toothpaste directly to any affected areas and leave it on overnight.
Avoid staining foods and drinks: For the first 48 hours after treatment, avoid foods and drinks that can stain, such as coffee, tea, wine, dark sauces, and highly pigmented fruits. Stick to "white" or light-coloured foods such as rice, chicken, pasta and water.
Cleaning your trays and gel storage: Clean trays with a soft toothbrush or cotton bud and cold water only, as hot water can distort them. Store both the trays and gel in a cool, dry place. Most whitening gels have a shelf life of around 12 months, and each tube should last for approximately one treatment (e.g. 7 days of upper and lower teeth).
Dental Work: Whitening gel affects only natural tooth enamel and to some degree the underlying dentine, and will not lighten crowns, bridges, fillings, or other restorations. If you are concerned about matching your dental work to your newly whitened teeth, discuss replacement options with our dentist.
Warnings: Keep bleaching gel out of reach of children, and avoid use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not smoke, eat, or drink anything other than water while whitening.
By following these guidelines, you’ll improve the effectiveness and comfort of your whitening experience. For any questions or prolonged sensitivity, please contact our clinic for support. For further details on foods to avoid after whitening, please read our blog here.
